When I first spoke with Antonia she was so sweet and soft spoken I felt her patience and compassion over the phone. I have definitely learned by spending time with this family that a support system is so necessary. The support and love of their friends and those other families who can understand what it is like to have a child with Down Syndrome is so necessary! I loved meeting Ayla for the first time! She has the most beautiful eyes ever and when she looks at you it makes you instantly smile.
She was being a little camera shy but we got a few of her smiling!
Here is The Smith’s Story:
When my husband and I were first told that my daughter had Down syndrome a couple weeks after she was born. We were heartbroken to say the less. Grieving the baby girl we were excepting to have. But over time we begun to realize we didn’t lose anything. We gained so much more then we can possibly write in words. Just as soon as we were able to “let go” of the vision we created in our head of what “perfect” was. We began to see a new vision of her and ourselves. That her story was going to unfold before our eyes, we started to embrace every moment of it. Now my husband and I can honestly say we are so excited to see what the future holds for her. That all her hopes and dreams can be realized! There are no limits! My personal daily prayer is for families who have been given unexpected news, like we did, to find their way through the maze of negativity and talk to real parents who have lived it. And to see it’s the beginning of something extraordinary!
I sure hope that these stories of joy change the way you think about disabilities becasue they may be labeled a disability but they are blessings!
